It all went wrong
We had an important visitor from China to our company in New York last summer and it was my job to see that this customer was properly looked after. Unfortunately, when I went out to a restaurant for a meal on the first evening with him, things did not go too well. Mistakes were made on both sides and I think we both learnt a lot about the two different cultures!
My first mistake was that I sat down on his right. I didn't realise that, as he was the guest, he should have sat on my right. This was bad enough but then I started to talk about the business deal. I didn't realise that my Chinese guest wanted to get to know me first. I became worried when my guest didn't want to start talking business.
